Kerry Simmonds Shows Northwood Academy Charter the importance of Perseverance

January was a busy month at Northwood Academy Charter School.  We started the month by viewing the perseverance video with Kerry Simmonds.  In her video, she taught us that we need to reach out to family and friends to help us stay on track and persevere through difficult times. She told us that she recently experienced some injuries and needed support from her family, friends and team members. That support helped her through her recovery. We discussed the importance of perseverance in our lives and in school. The entire fourth grade students showed perseverance during days of benchmark testing this month. Kerry challenged the students to create a rap, song or skit about perseverance. The students worked well together while creating their raps, songs and skits to show Kerry what perseverance meant to them. The students not only accepted Kerry’s challenge, but they added a few more activities as well.  They created some wonderful comic strips and short stories about perseverance.

This month we utilized our space on our school website to share with parents and our school community what we we were learning this month. We also tweeted out photos from our Twitter account @NorthwoodChamps this month showing what we've learned about perseverance.

The Classroom Champions Program is a program that connects U.S. Olympic athletes with classrooms across the country. Using video and live chats, our athlete Kerry Simmonds along with Mr. Burst, Mrs. Gannon, Mrs. Jacobs and Miss Capp will motivate our students to recognize their potential, develop them to become leaders, set goals and dream big, while educating them in the practical use of communications technology.  Our classes are 4 out of  65 classrooms in the country that are participating in the program. Northwood Academy is proud to welcome back the Classroom Champions Program for the fourth year in a row.
