Health Fair
The first activity that kicked off the month of healthy living was our school wide health fair. The fourth grade Bulldogs visited the health fair that was hosted by the seventh and eighth grade students at Northwood. The seventh and eighth grade students demonstrated to students the importance of exercising by lifting weights and dancing. Outside vendors from local health care companies, hospitals, dental offices and colleges gave demonstrations and provided information about healthy living. It was a very informative experience for all of the students in attendance.
Lankenau Hospital Visit
The next activity our fourth grade students participated in was a visit to Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. All of the fourth grade Bulldogs visited Lankenau Hospital and received a lesson on healthy living. Students were able to see a life-like skeleton named Pandora. They learned about different bones and how blood circulates throughout the human body. The fourth grade Bulldogs learned about the parts of the food plate. They learned about what good foods they need to put in their bodies, and foods to stay away from. At the end of the lesson, students had the chance to get out of their seats and participate in some aerobic exercises.
#whitecard
The #whitecard activity for April 6th was a lot of fun for the students and teachers. On April 5th, the teachers introduced the meaning behind #whitecard to their students. Then, students brainstormed in small groups picture ideas for their small groups and the grade as a whole. The students came up with some creative ideas that revolved around sports, friendship, and silliness. Students posted their photos on Twitter and our school’s Instagram page. As a grade, all the students came together to form a huge 6 in the middle of our gymnasium. All of the students proudly held up the white cards. April 6th was a great day of fun and community for our fourth grade bulldogs. Toward the end of the day, we noticed something on Twitter that became a highlight for us. Steve Mesler was called out for not posting his #whitecard picture before the Northwood Bulldogs. Miss Cappuccino found the most humor in this.
Healthy Choices Game Show
The fourth grade Bulldogs at Northwood Academy Charter School had a blast creating and participating in the Healthy Choices Game Show Kahoot! Miss Cappuccino and Mr. Burst’s brought their classes together to generate a Kahoot! that had ten questions with four answer choices for each question revolving around healthy living tips. Miss Cappuccino’s class and Mrs. Gannon’s class invited two third grade classes to compete in the Healthy Choices Game Show Kahoot!, while Mr. Burst’s class and Mrs. Jacob’s classes invited two different third grade classes to compete in the Healthy Choices Game Show Kahoot! The fourth grade Northwood Bulldogs’ goals for these lessons were to spread healthy living knowledge to the third grade, and have some friendly competition in the Kahoot! game.
Each of the third and fourth grade classes had at least five participants compete in the Healthy Choices Game Show Kahoot! The other students in the classroom were the audience members. The audience members held up signs and cheered for their classmates. The third and fourth grade Northwood Bulldogs had the pleasure of having Mr. Bonner as their host of the game. His comedic timing and energy made the experience even more memorable. At the end of the event, the third graders were able to walk away with some great tips and information that will help them have a healthier lifestyle. Also, they had an opportunity to see the fun and exciting activities that the fourth grade Northwood Bulldogs have been taken part in.

Healthy Living List
The fourth grade Bulldogs at Northwood Academy Charter School were eager to make a healthy living list of over 100 different healthy living choices. On day 1 of this project, the four homerooms split up the work and each homeroom generated 25 choices that were entered on a Google Doc. As the choices were entered, the
students and teachers discussed the benefits of the choices that were added to the list. Also, students made sure that they were not repeating any healthy choices that the other classes came up with.
On day 2 of this project, the students in each classroom listed and drew pictures of their healthy living choices. All of the students in the classes were able to participate in the creation of the poster. When all four classes were finished with their portion of the poster, the posters were put together to form one large poster.
The students wanted to have some fun with the large poster. The students took a group photo with all the participants involved. Then, students were selected from each of the four classrooms to participate in an activity that would show the height of the poster. Students wanted to show the world how big the poster is in
comparison to fourth grade students’ heights. The students laid down on the ground from head to toe. The poster measured out to almost four Northwood Bulldogs.
The Northwood Bulldogs had a wonderful time planning and creating the poster of 100 different healthy living choices. The students and classrooms worked well together as a team to meet the deadline of completion. The teachers and students were all proud of their effort and perseverance.

Poster Contest
The International Day Of Sport For Development And Peace (IDSDP) poster contest was the last activity completed by the students this month. Students were placed into groups of 3-4 students. The students came up with a message about how sports made the world a better place. Two students from Mr. Burst’s class measured out 24 inches of poster board for each group to complete their message. The groups’ topics ranged from respect for others, fair play during sporting events, healthy living, and how sports make the world a better place for all genders and races. The students worked well together generating a rough draft of their posters. They made compromises and took the necessary steps to have their posters done on time. After completing the posters, the students uploaded their pictures to Instagram and Twitter. These were the hashtags that they used: #IDSDP2016 #iPlayforSDGS #sport4betterworld #powerofsport #NorthwoodChamps #dreambig
Last Words on April
In closing, the teachers of the fourth grade Bulldogs want the Classroom Champions community to know how much we admire and respect our students’ efforts. This month, our students had state testing in ELA, Math, and Science. Our students showed perseverance by completing all of the long and intense testing, they participated in many Classroom Champions’ events, and the students maintained good behavior as role models for the students of other grades in our school building. Our students have made us so proud and we are excited for what the remaining days of the year have in store for us.
